Richard Strauss: Tod und Verklärung, Metamorphosen, Vier letzte Lieder (DG The Originals)
I bought the LP versions of these many years ago, way back in the 1970s.

The golden combination of Karajan/Berlin Philharmonic is at its finest
Karajan recorded Tod und Verklärung 3 times; 1960 with Vienna Philharmonic, 1971 and 1982 with Berlin Philharmonic.

Janozitz without Karajan
I just finished listening to a recording of the Four Last Songs - on an Italian label - sung by Gundula Janowitz with the RAI Orchestra of Rome conducted by Sergiu Celibidache, and it makes me wonder just how much of the magic of the recording under review here came from the conductor!

A sour note... OK, a few of them
Sorry, but I have to get this off my chest: How could they have even released this recording of Metamorphosen, given the fact that the first cellist, in bar 457, comes in a perfect fifth lower than written, and doesn't figure it out for a couple of bars?
